National seat belt enforcement campaign kicks off May 18

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The name brings memories of commercials and billboards — Click It or Ticket. But each year, thousands are ticketed for the offense.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office put out a reminder Thursday that the campaign would go into enforcement from May 18 to May 31, during one of the busiest weekends for traveling of the year.

Deputies say they’ll be taking a no-excuses approach to enforcement. The maximum penalty for  driving without a seat belt is $143 for a driver and $193 for a passenger under 16.

New York State’s Traffic Safety Committee says 34 percent of all vehicle occupants killed in crashes weren’t wearing seat belts. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
