Art Rooney’s grandson donates $2M to St. Bona University

ALLEGANY, N.Y. (AP) — A Pittsburgh attorney who’s a grandson of the late Steelers owner Art Rooney Sr. is donating $2 million to St. Bonaventure University in western New York.

The private Franciscan college announced Monday that John R. “Jack” McGinley Jr., a 1965 St. Bonaventure graduate, and the Rita M. McGinley Foundation are making the financial commitment to enhance the school’s University Ministries.

McGinley’s links to St. Bonventure date back to the 1950s, when Rooney’s brother, Father Silas Rooney, arranged for the Steelers to hold their training camp on the campus located near the Pennsylvania border 140 miles north of Pittsburgh. Father Silas was a 1929 Bonaventure graduate and served as the school’s athletic director in the `50s.

As a boy, McGinley would visit his uncle at Bonaventure and watch the Steelers practice. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
