Man dies in Rochester after being detained by police

ROCHESTER, N.Y (AP) – A 50-year-old upstate New York man has died after being hit with a stun gun by police during a confrontation.

Witnesses say the man, identified by family members as Richard Davis of Rochester, died Sunday morning after he charged at officers and was tased.

Medics at the scene tried to revive Davis, but he was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police had responded to reports that Davis had crashed a pickup truck into a church and several vehicles. Police say he ran off, returned, got back into the truck and crashed into a sign and a home and ignored commands to get down on the ground, instead charging at officers with fists clenched.

Police Chief Michael Ciminelli says an internal investigation will be conducted. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
