Crackdown on drunk drivers results in thousands of denied licenses

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Thousands of drivers have been denied their licenses due to drunk driving convictions due to stricter laws since 2012.

That’s when the DMV started denying a larger percentage of drivers their licenses during the renewal process. New York State officials say those who were denied were repeat drunk drivers, some of whom were convicted of driving drunk five times or more.

More than 7,500 former drivers have been denied in less than three years. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
