BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Nearly 100 years after getting the right to vote, women will welcome another landmark; landing on the ten dollar bill.
The Treasury Department announced the redesigned bill will be unveiled in 2020.
So who should the leading lady be?
News 4 heard from several western New Yorkers, who hoped for everyone from Jacqueline Kennedy to Rosa Parks.
The most popular guesses for who will grace the bill were Eleanor Roosevelt and Oprah Winfrey.
“She probably has a lot of ten dollar bills at home so, I think she would be a logical choice. I think of Oprah, I think of a lot of money and currency and I think she’s been pretty instrumental,” said Tim Farrell of Hamburg.
Tracy Moretta of Buffalo told News 4 she’d like to see a prominent government figure on the bill.
“I think one of the women who are serving on the Supreme Court would be a good choice,” Moretta said.
But according to U.S. law, you have to be deceased in order to make it on a bill.
Still, some people are hoping for a modern female icon.
“I would like to see Beyonce, because like all throughout history it’s always like men everything, and she’s kind of changed that because she’s like girls run the world and girls taking over, and I think that’d be a good thing to see,” said Emma Daley of Buffalo.
The announcement of a new ten dollar bill came after a recent viral campaign to get a woman on the twenty dollar bill, but the ten was up for a redesign.
The public will have a chance to weigh-in on this, during the next several month, by using the Twitter hashtag #TheNew10, you can voice your opinion on who should replace Hamilton.
