Police: Handyman swindled 77 year-old woman out of $18,000

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Buffalo Police say they have arrested an alleged scam artist who preyed on a 77 year-old woman.

Police say that Kevin Anderson took more than $18,000 from the woman over the course of 10 months. They say he befriended the woman and began working for her as a handyman.

Later, he falsely claimed to be an injured police officer with a sick wife and child who needed medications to survive, authorities say. The woman gave him money to pay for medicine over many months because he told her he did not have health insurance.

Police allege that when the woman ran out of money Anderson then began to intimidate her to get more. The victim asked her daughter for money, which the daughter found suspicious and she contacted police.

Anderson has been charged with numerous felonies.

Police ask anyone with information on this case or a similar case to contact detectives in the E district at 716-851-4019.
