Iconic general store celebrates 85 years in business

EAST AURORA, N.Y. (WIVB) –  An iconic general store is celebrating a big birthday this weekend. Vidler’s in East Aurora turns 85.

For it’s 85th birthday Vidler’s is celebrating its hometown “5 and 10″ feel and its local roots. Co-Owner Beverly Vidler says, It’s just a great place, I always think of it as meat loaf, apple pie and Vidler’s!”

In 1930 Robert Vidler opened The Fair Store” in the height of the Great Depression. No one thought it would make it 6 weeks. But 85 years, and three generations later, business is still booming. The family says they have the small town of East Aurora to thank for that.pic3

Co-Owner Don Vidler says, We know our friends, our neighbors, our high school classmates, our grammar school classmates, it is an institution. Sometimes the inmates are running the asylum but it’s a fun place to work!”
With cake, balloons, and a little music,The Vidler family wants to thank the community that has been supporting it for decades.

Nikera Kolacki from Holland shops at Vidler’s almost one a week.”I remember coming here with my grandma and it’s just amazing that it’s been here for so long. Its an institution in East Aurora,” she says. “Every time I need that out of the ordinary thing, that thing you can’t find anywhere else, I just head over to Vidler’s because Vidler’s will have it.”

The Vidlers say the shop is now 20 times bigger then when their grandfather first opened it. They credit the same secret to success he had in the 30’s; Good prices for good quality merchandise, and great customer service.

Beverly Vidler says, “I always tell everyone this is a very happy business. People coming are out shopping for the day, they are healthy, they are with family or friends.”

“Everyone here knows where things are, they know how they work. There is a lot of stuff in this store, but we have a terrific crew working here, we always have,” says Don Vidler.

In honor of the 85th birthday celebration, local representatives from the County are making June 20th “Vidler’s Day” in the Village of East Aurora.
