FRIENDSHIP, N.Y. (WIVB) – It’s been a long but relatively quiet night in Allegany County near Friendship and Bolivar. At the state police barracks trucks and teams have been moving in and out of all night but the two escaped murderers Richard Matt and David Sweat, who escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility 2 weeks ago are still at large.
Saturday, a resident claimed to have seen the escaped inmates, near I-86, which started a large and intense manhunt for the duo.
Early Sunday morning, almost 20 state police trucks left the barracks and headed north towards Interstate 86. Last night, they were searching every car that passed by, looking in trunks and under seats, for any sighting of the men.
Saturday, traffic on I-86 was backed up for almost a mile, as state troopers, armed with rifles, inspected each car. The checks are still going on, so if traveling in the area, be prepared to stop.
Neighbors News 4 spoke to who live just a few miles outside Friendship say they’re armed and ready if they spot either inmate.
Laura Warner, from Belmont said, “Hey if we see them, they come up on our porch or on our lawn, we’re going to protect ourselves.”
“There’s woods everywhere, there are so many places where people are, you don’t know if their going to run into your lawn, or what area they are because Friendship is only 4 miles away,” Tori Warner said.
Doug Comstock has lived here his whole life, he says the check points and police presence remind him of a search for another WNY killer.
“Bucky Phillips. Yep, similar, similar to that. They need to catch these guys. These guys are bad. They need to catch them and put everybody at
Residents tell us homes were also searched.
The original hot spot for the two escaped inmates was near the I-86 bridge, on East Maple Grove Road near some train tracks.
Other reported sightings of the two inmates across the state have also been near train tracks, leading some to question if they are traveling on foot or if they’re possibly hoping onto trains.
State Police have not revealed much information into this weekend’s search, only to say that the sighting of the men is still unconfirmed.
Police say if anybody in the area does see the escaped criminals, they should immediately call 911.
