Tip fails to yield capture of escaped murderers: search called off

FRIENDSHIP, N.Y. (WIVB) — After nearly 36 hours of searching for two escaped murderers the search in Allegany County has officially been called off.

Multiple agencies banded together in Allegany County Saturday, after a woman from Friendship called 911 reporting that she witnessed two suspicious people walking along railroad tracks.

Police took the tip seriously and launched a full scale manhunt for Richard Matt and David Sweat; two murderers who escaped from Dannemora’s Clinton Correctional Facility some 16 days ago.

News 4 learned late Sunday evening that the search in the southern tier ended, without the capture of the two escapees.

Police continue to search in Dannemora, N.Y.

State police ask anyone with information to call 911 immediately. There is a $125,000 reward out for the capture of the two men.
