Crews rescue puppy stuck in drain

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Buffalo firefighters and city workers saved the life of a puppy trapped in a vent pipe for more than two hours Wednesday.

Crews were called just after 4 p.m. to 397 Warwick Ave. in Buffalo after someone reported the dog being trapped in a sewer drain. The caller said he could hear the puppy but not see it.

Response efforts more than two hours, but applause erupted as rescue workers pulled the tiny black teacup terrier named Bailey from the drain. Large equipment was required to excavate a hole large enough for a man to climb into.

“I love Buffalo firefighters, I love Buffalo police, I love all of y’all,” the owner of the dog said.

Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield says it took a collaborative effort, but the success at the end was worth it.

“Some people might think we went over and above, but that’s what our guys do every day,” Whitfield said. “We’re very grateful there was a happy ending. We’re very satisfied.”

When crews pulled Bailey from the pipe, they immediately administered oxygen to the dog.

Following the dog’s rescue, crews worked to fill in the large hole, which was more than six feet deep.
