Blackhawks draft WNY’s Gilbert in 3rd round

SUNRISE, Fla. (WIVB) – Former St. Joe’s star Dennis Gilbert went off the board in the 3rd round of the 2015 NHL Draft, with the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks drafting the defenseman.

Gilbert, who played last season in the USHL for the Chicago Steel, has already committed to play Division I hockey at Notre Dame next season.

He says his defensive game improved quite a bit this past season, which helped him take a big leap in the NHL Central Scouting rankings by the end of the season.

Gilbert is just the latest Western New York native to join the organization, with GM Stan Bowman, a Canisius grad, and South Buffalo’s Patrick Kane already firmly in place. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
