MALONE, N.Y (WIVB) – Before he was killed, police say Richard Matt broke into a cabin around Malone, in northern New York.
Bob Willett Sr. believes killer Richard Matt who had escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility broke into the Willett family’s summer hunting cabin and helped himself to a bottle of liquor.
Willet told News 4 that his son called him and said there was “something out of place” at the camp. That “something” was the liquor bottle.
Bob Willett Jr. was worried that someone may come up the trail to his home, which is located not far from the cabin.
Heeding his fathers advice, Bob Jr. called the New York State Police and told them about the situation.
A short time later, Richard Matt was shot and killed by authorities. New York governor Andrew Cuomo says Matt didn’t comply with commands from officers who confronted him.
Willett said he hasn’t heard if his son will get the $50,000 reward for making the call that lead to the capture of Richard Matt.
Saturday, law enforcement continued to search for escaped prisoner David Sweat.
