ALBANY, N.Y. (WIVB) — As David Sweat opens up more to police, an investigation into the escape of two murderers from the Clinton Correctional Facility is being blown open.
The investigation is progressing with the new information as Sweat’s condition improves. Early Tuesday a dozen state employees at the maximum-security prison were placed on administrative leave. That could be directly related to information provided by Sweat.
Three members of the prison’s executive team — including the facility’s superintendent Steven Racette — and nine security staff members are included in the list of officials who are now facing scrutiny.
Officials say meanwhile, Sweat’s condition has improved from serious to fair in the hospital. They’ll keep him chained to his bed and under armed guard until his condition improves enough to return him to the Clinton Correctional Facility. Sweat is recovering from two bullet holes in his torso which he incurred while fleeing from police under two miles from the Canadian border.
The Clinton County District Attorney says he expects to file charges against David Sweat related to his escape.
