BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)- They brought their message straight to the steps of City Hall.
A group called Parents For a Safer Delaware Park staged a picket in front of City Hall Thursday afternoon to send a message to Mayor Byron Brown. Last week, the mayor suggested boosting the speed limit on the Scajaquada Expressway from 30mph to 40mph on the western section of the expressway away from Delaware Park.
NY State Department of Transportation suddenly lowered the speed limit from 50mph to 30mph on June 1, days after a car veered off the expressway and killed a 3 year old boy on the Ring Road in Delaware Park. Many drivers have been frustrated adjusting the slower speed, and the Mayor believes raising part of it to 40mph may allow drivers to merge more safely than at a lower speed.
This group of about a dozen residents is strongly in favor of keeping the speed limit at 30 for the entire stretch.
“I’m sure people would say a safe park is number one” said the group’s founder Kerry Machemer.” In order to get the road reclassified as a parkway, the road needs to remain at 30mph for the entire stretch because it’s one road. We want it to remain 30 for safety reasons.”
