Man dies during dog attack

HAMILTON, ONTARIO (WIVB) – Neighbors came out with baseball bats after hearing screams and seeing a man on the ground being attacked by a dog.

Hamilton Police say the man had collapsed during the incident and died. However, they say post mortem shows that the dog attack was not the cause of death.

Neighbors say it was a horrible scene, as some tried to help.

Even after being struck, witnesses said the animal would not back off.

“The dog would maybe stop for a couple of seconds and then go right back again after the person,” said Guylaine Rivet, whose husband had tried to help.

Hamilton, Ontario Constable Steve Welton said “When we arrived on scene we found that the man was obviously on the ground and the officers attempted to intervene and stop the dog from continuing any type of attacks.”

Reports now indicate the dog in question was a Shar Pei and Fila mix, and that it was difficult to capture. The dog is being carefully monitored at Animal Control in Hamilton.

The name of the victim, believed to be in his thirtes, is not being released.

While police are saying the man’s death was not caused by the dog attack, they are also not saying if the exact cause of death has been pinpointed.
