S.C. mom dies after being impaled on fence while climbing into pool area

GREER, SC — A South Carolina mom died early Tuesday morning after she was impaled on a fence at a gated community while trying to get into a pool, officials said.

Cheryl Renee Hambley Maury, age 33, of Greer, died just before 3 a.m. while she was in surgery at a Greenville hospital, a TV station in Greenville reported.

Part of the fence was still in her leg when she was quickly rushed to surgery, officials said.

Maury was originally from Mountain View, Calif. and leaves behind a husband and at least two small children, according to her Facebook profile.

Coroner Parks Evans told WYFF that Maury and a friend were trying to get over a fence just after midnight at the Iveybrooke housing development on Ivybrooke Avenue off Garlington Road, WYFF reported.

Maury lost her footing, fell onto the fence and a wrought-iron post pierced her upper leg/pelvis area, Evans said.

Maury  was taken to the hospital around 12:40 am, according to Evans.

“They had to cut the fence as quickly as possible so the patient could be transported… because you really don’t want to remove the patient from the obstacle, you want to remove the patience and the obstacle,” Boiling Springs Fire Chief Bill Sizemore told WYFF.

Maury and her family moved from Arlington, Texas to the Greer area late last year.

“Life always proves it has the upper hand and never fails to show us just how vulnerable and fragile life is. Prayers for Cheryl Renee Hambley, Chris Maury and family,” wrote Arlington friend Todd DoBucki on Facebook.

The Greenville County Sheriff and the coroner are still investigating.
