Woman who stole from church sentenced to probation

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) — A woman who pleaded guilty in April to stealing from her church will not be heading to jail following her sentencing on Thursday.

Kim Pietrzak, 46, faced charges in November of 2014 for stealing roughly $50,000 from her Cheektowaga church through its bingo program. On Thursday a judge sentenced Pietrzak to five years of probation and 500 hours of community service, but she faced up to seven years behind bars.

Pietrzak, who was the parish’s business manager, has already paid the required $10,000 in restitution to the Resurrection Roman Catholic Parish on Como Park Boulevard. She spoke during her sentencing.

“I just want to move on with my life and my family and just put this behind us and continue on,” she said. “I do apologize again.”

The case of the missing $50,000 might not be over yet. Pietrzak said she and other church staff used the money for gambling over the course of years. The diocese says their investigation is continuing.
