WALES, N.Y. (WIVB) — A community is coming together to support a family which lost a daughter following a fatal accident in Wales earlier in the week.
When a pickup truck crashed head-on into a van with three people inside, two survived, but a 9-year-old perished in the wreckage. The Wales community is now mourning the loss of Katie Elizabeth Durkin, a student of Wales Primary School.
A representative of the Durkin family who reached out on their behalf said Durkin, a student who was going into the fourth grade in September, loved sports, her family and her toys.
“Katie was a funny, creative, quirky, bright, always happy, loving kid who was beloved by all who came to know her,” the representative said. “She was always helpful, generous and kind and was the light and love of our lives.”
The Durkin family says they’re attempting to push forward a project which will help the community remember everything Katie’s memory stands for — an athletic field for children her age to enjoy. One of three elementary schools within the Iroquois Central School District, Wales Primary has no athletic fields for its students.
Family members say they want to raise money to develop a plot of land next to the school and turn it into a “needed on-site resource.”
“This needs to be something on a scale and of the quality that is a fitting tribute to an amazing kid,” the representative said.
The family has turned to a non-profit to help make that goal a reality. The Wales Primary Parent-Teacher Organization is accepting donations on behalf of the Durkin family to make that dream a reality.
