Record breaking crowd watches Sabres scrimmage

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)- More than 17,000 Buffalo Sabres fans packed into the First Niagara Center Friday night for the annual Blue and Gold Scrimmage.

“I’m here to see the future,” said fan Matt Miller. “A lot of prospects going to bring a lot of heart, very excited to see Eichel.”

Few fans were excited as Garrett Chambers.

“Having a player of this caliber kind of sends a message to all hockey fans,” said Chambers.

He spent nearly two hours in line to be the first person to buy a #15 Jack Eichel jersey.

“I’m really eager to see him play and I want to be able to show it,” said Chambers.

People at the First Niagara Center wore that pride for the first time on Friday, hours after Eichel picked his number.

“I think we’re going be a contender,” said Miller. “They’re going to bring a lot of work, a lot of heart. I definitely think we can make it to the playoffs.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
