NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WIVB) – Shortly after 7 a.m. Sunday, the U.S. Coast Guard received an emergency report of a fisherman that was swept away by the water of the Niagara River.
Officials tell News 4, two men took the Vanderbilt stairs down to Devils Hole for an early morning fishing excursion. Shortly after their arrival, one of the men was pulled into the water and quickly taken under by the force of the whirlpool.
At 7:30 a.m. a full active search had begun.
Crews from the U.S. Coast Guard, NYS Parks Police, Whirlpool Jet Boat, Lewiston Fire and the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department were on the scene while Coast Guard helicopters circled the search area.
Parks Police have since suspended the active search and are working on a recovery operation.
