Sheriff: Firefighters have pumped out 200 basements

SILVER CREEK, N.Y. (WIVB) — Chautauqua County Sheriff Joseph Gerace knows difficult days remain for hundreds of people in the Southern Tier. He calls the flooding situation “extremely challenging” for families and for firefighters.

Sheriff Gerace offered plenty of praise for firefighters during a live interview with News 4 Wake Up. “Many many firefighters really gave it their all to help other people and leave their families behind while they were out doing that,” Sheriff Gerace said.

He reported fire services crews have already helped pump about 200 basements. The water also washed away secondary roads. Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz tweeted Wednesday, “Our neighbors in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties helped us during the November Snowstorm and now it’s our turn to help.” Erie County sent its mobile command unit to assist in response efforts. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
