Governor Cuomo weighs in on Route 198 debate

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Governor Andrew Cuomo said he doesn’t regret changing the speed limit on Route 198.

The governor reduced the speed from 50 miles per hour to 30 miles per hour after 3-year-old Maksym Sugorovskiy was killed in May when a vehicle left the expressway and struck him. Sugorovskiy was in Delaware Park with his parents and sister when the incident occurred.

Cuomo said a common complaint is that government acts slow. He said this shows it doesn’t have to be that way.

“This is about saving lives. How many lives do you have to lose? How many injuries do you have to have before you say something has to be done?” Gov. Cuomo said.

The Democrat added that the changes to Route 198 will be studied. If the speed limit needs to be changed, it can be. However, Cuomo said, the right thing was done. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
