OAKFIELD, N.Y. (WIVB) — In Genesee County, residents are seeing an odd trend grow alongside summer crops — mystery handymen are nailing shoes to utility poles in Oakfield.

On much of the stretch of Hutton Road in Oakfield, shoes have been nailed to every pole. The shoes aren’t limited to heels or sneakers, they include sandals and slippers, too. First reported in The Batavian, nobody in the town reportedly knows who is proliferating the odd trend.

Strange trends like this can grow and capture a town’s attention. A shoe-laden tree in the Town of Yates is the creation of an Orleans County man who threw shoes into a tree, and residents have added to it ever since. In East Aurora, a trend captured the attention of western New York when UFO signs continued popping up alongside street direction signs.

Although it can be illegal to attach signs and objects to public objects, officials have said they aren’t too concerned with prosecuting individuals.
