Officer stops moving car from driving into crowd

(ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) — Lieutenant Jason Schiedel with the Orchard Park Police Department was on duty Wednesday night when an intoxicated woman attempted to drive through the Taste of Orchard Park.

The police department had a few blocks along North Buffalo Street closed for the annual festival. Police say Katherine Clare, 59, drove up to the barricade and insisted she wanted to go that route to her house.

“When I turned my head, she proceeded to the event,” says Lt. Schiedel. “I ran after the vehicle, started screaming at the driver.  She did slow down enough where I was able to get in through the driver side window, put the car in park and remove the keys.”

Lt. Schiedel says he has never had to hop into a moving car before but he didn’t think twice about doing it.

“It was an unsafe environment for that to be happening,” says Lt. Schiedel. “That’s just a natural reaction.”

There were around 7,000 to 10,000 people at the festival when Clare attempted to drive through it.

“I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night if I let her drive through that,” says Lt. Schiedel. “Who knows what could have happened. I don’t think it is up and above; it is common sense for anybody to do.”

Clare is facing charges for driving while intoxicated and other traffic violations. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
