Buffalo Fire Department gains large class of new recruits

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – The Buffalo Fire Department welcomed the largest graduating class in recent history into its ranks.

City officials, including Mayor Byron Brown and Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield welcomed a total of 109 men and women into the Buffalo Fire Department ranks.  The ceremony took place at Bennett High School on Thursday, with new recruits bringing the total of Buffalo Fire Department Employees up to 684 members.

“I’m very pleased to be here for the graduation of firefighters from the Buffalo Firefighter Academy — 109 firefighters, one of the largest classes in the history of the City of Buffalo,” Mayor Brown said. “(A) very proud day for the Buffalo Fire Department, (a) very proud day for the city.”

One more class is expected to be sworn in by the end of 2015.
