Jaws of life used after beer truck collision

PENDLETON, N.Y. (WIVB) — A dangerous collision between a truck and an SUV on South Transit Road forced first responders to break out the jaws of life to aid in a rescue.

Niagara County Sheriff’s Deputies responded with emergency medical personnel to the scene of the morning accident between a beer truck and an SUV. Investigation showed a 22-year-old man driving an SUV attempted to make a U-turn in front of the truck while driving along side it.

The collision that followed forced both vehicles to veer off the four lane highway and off-road. First responders with the Wendelville Volunteer Fire Company utilized the jaws of life to pull the driver of the SUV out of his vehicle. Police say Adam Youngman was flown by Mercy Flight in critical condition to the Erie County Medical Center.

The truck driver had no injuries to speak of, but was carrying roughly 10,000 pounds of beer in its trailer.

Officials cleaned up the scene of the accident nearly seven hours after the two vehicles collided at 7:45 a.m. An investigation is continuing into the crash.
