Car thief arrested after being caught on camera

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A car thief who entered an unlocked car and drove away with it at a south Buffalo home is behind bars.

A homeowner says they caught the thief on video stealing the car, but admit they left the car unlocked with the keys inside. They showed the footage to Buffalo Police, and only a day later, police located the car and the alleged thief.

Police say they not only found the car in North Buffalo early Thursday morning, but they found clues inside that led them to an arrest. Buffalo Police utilized food stamps inside to trace the theft back to 39-year-old James Kukabica.

Kukabica stands charged with grand larceny and several other charges. The owners of the car say they will ensure they don’t leave the car unlocked again. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
