SANDUSKY, Oh. (AP Modified) — A man is dead in Ohio, killed by a roller coaster at one of the nation’s most popular amusement parks.

Officials from Cedar Point say James A. Young died at about 5 p.m. when he bypassed a fence at the park to look for a lost cellphone. The enclosed area belonged to the Raptor, a large roller coaster.

While in the enclosed area, officials say the ride or someone on it struck the man, and he succumbed to his wounds before first responders could attempt to treat him. Park safety officials say they responded to the scene soon after.

The park confirms the death in a statement saying “a guest entered a restricted, fenced area of Raptor and was struck by the ride.” It says its “thoughts and prayers go out to the family.”

The amusement park sits along Lake Erie in Sandusky and has billed itself as the best in the world.

Police in Ohio remained on the scene into the evening, conducting an official investigation into the accident. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
