Back to school must haves for 2015

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – It’s the middle of August, which means it’s time to start thinking about back to school shopping. The crowds at malls like the Walden Galleria are already starting to swell, with families hunting for the perfect jeans, sneakers, and backpacks.

“I’ve gotten a new North Face. And I’ve gotten some Abercrombie and Fitch. And I’m on my way to H&M,” 12-year-old Elaina Daddirio told News 4. She is deciding carefully what she’ll wear on her first day of seventh grade at Clarence Middle School. But she knows one thing she’ll be bringing with her.

“No matter what, everyone has a Vera Bradley lunchbox,” she said. “My table was called the Vera table, because everyone had a Vera Bradley lunch box.”

Ava Knapp and Vanessa Sauret, sophomores at Williamsville North, said the bags a must-have item at their school, too. “They’re pretty popular. Pretty much everyone has one at school,” Ava said.

The new Vera Bradley store at the Cheektowaga mall was still well stocked with the bags when News 4 visited. They had three different styles, each sold for $34. “They’re pretty affordable so I can pay for them myself,” Knapp said, “but my birthday is coming up, so I can do that.

Logan Huhta of Erie Pennsylvania needed a little help from his parents buying his new school shoes.

“They’re Kobe 5’s with the American flag,” he said. “All my friends have them, and they’re really comfy.”

His new sneakers set his mom back about $130. “That was just what they cost,” she said.

Athletic shoes aren’t for everyone though. For a lot of kids, it’s all about the classics. Converse and Vans are some of the best selling shoes for kids at this time of year. They go for about $40 to $50 a pair. That’s what Tracey Gliona of Toronto bought for her sons.

“We spent a lot more than we the thought we were going to, but we haven’t done a lot this summer, because of their sporting schedules. So, the shopping spree is kind of their vacation, it’s where they get to splurge a little bit,” Gliona explained.

Turns out that back to school splurging isn’t just for kids. When asked what the most expensive thing she had bought was, Gliona replied, “We got really really good deals on the shoes so it wasn’t that bad. For myself it was probably a Michael Kors ring.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
