Police identify driver in stolen vehicle chase on I-90

LANCASTER, N.Y. (WIVB) — When a stolen car crossed the path of a New York State Trooper, a chase ensued on Tuesday afternoon near Lancaster.

Police say they scanned the license plates of a New Jersey car, only to learn its owner reported it as stolen. Officers attempted to signal for the driver to pull over, but a chase ensued when the driver refused to comply.

A chase spanned from Pembroke through Depew on the I-90 westbound, but ended when the driver attempted to exit the roadway, crashing into a rock quarry after traveling down an embankment.

First responders rushed the driver to the Erie County Medical Center. Wednesday, authorities identified him as 21 year-old Andrew J. Betancur Jr. of Columbus, Ohio. His condition is not available.

Police at the scene worked to investigate the crash with surveying equipment, but declined further comment.

Troopers say the car he was driving was reported stolen by police in Gates, outside Rochester, in Monroe County.
