NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario (WIVB) — Niagara Falls Police say that an American family will not face charges in the case of a baby locked in a safe in a Niagara Falls hotel.

Police said they were concerned because the family left the Howard Johnson Hotel on Victoria Avenue before authorities arrived Tuesday. Police confirm there was a language barrier that caused a miscommunication.

The family told police they asked the hotel staff to unlock the safe immediately after an older child locked the baby inside while playing with it.

The child was not injured. The family turned themselves in to police in Markham Wednesday evening after hearing police were looking for them. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
