Erie County promotes rain barrels as green initiative

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Erie County is promoting rain barrels as a part of their ‘Go Green’ initiative. The rain barrels capture water and allow homeowners to use it as a resource.

“It has the nutrients our plants need,” said Mary Rossi, and Environmental Compliance Specialist for Erie County. “It’s the best thing for your garden.”

Here’s how the barrels work: as rain falls and your gutter catches it, the water goes down the spout to the barrel where it is filtered and funneled in.

“When you reduce run off by infiltrating precipitation or using it in your garden through rain barrels, you’re reducing run off and therefore the potential for storm water to carry pollutants into our waterways,” Rossi said.

Aside from the environmental benefits, the barrels save money for the people who have them.

“You aren’t using your garden hose so you’re reducing water use,” Rossi said. “You’ll just have a lower water bill and who doesn’t love that.”
