UB Students returning means boom in local business

Today was move in day for all the new University at Buffalo North Campus students; about 4,000 of them ready and excited to start the Fall semester. The rest of this weekend will see returning students moving in, and it won’t be long before campus is bustling.

“We’re a community of about 40,000 people on a daily basis.” says Dennis Black, the Vice President for University Life and Services. “About 29,000 students and about 10,000 faculty, staff, supporters, volunteers or community members. So it’s a small city on a daily basis, but it’s got lots of small communities inside of it.”

And on a daily basis, many of these nearly 40,000 will venture out to local businesses. For many businesses around UB, the Summer is considered the ‘off season,’ and all the students coming back will bring business back up. The manager at Blue Bull Tavern says they usually see a 30-40% increase in business this time of year from students returning.

Along with a boom in local business, many of the students will also end up working at these local businesses to make money themselves.
