ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) — At Bills practice on Thursday, the media met with Rex Ryan, expecting him to name one of two possible starting quarterbacks for the upcoming preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Instead, he chose a third.
EJ Manuel will make his first start of the preseason against the Steelers at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Despite Tyrod Taylor and Matt Cassel’s edge in the quarterback competition, Ryan decided it was EJ who should take the field first in the Bills’ third preseason game.
“Nobody can say that nobody was given a fair shot in this,” said Ryan. “And EJ earned his shot.”
Taylor and Cassel will also see time with the Bills’ first team offense, one that will likely be without three starting wide receivers, the starting running back and starting tight end. Ryan did not say how long he expects Manuel to play.
