Stunt plane crashes ahead of NY air show, killing pilot

NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. (AP) — A pilot preparing for an air show over the coming weekend is dead following a plane crash in a wooded area.

Police are investigating the crash of the GILES 202 aircraft that went down at around 2 p.m. Officials say the plane model is an aerobatic model, one that would perform stunts during the coming festivities.

An early investigation revealed the pilot took the plane into a steep dive when the plane suffered a structural failure. When first responders hit the scene, they say the pilot, who was the sole occupant of the plane, died in the wreckage, but nobody else suffered injury.

Officials at the air show cancelled the remainder of Friday’s flying activities in light of the event, but activities will go forward during planned events starting on Saturday.

New York State Police along with the National Transportation Safety Board are heading up an investigation to learn more in-depth reasoning behind the crash.
