Troopers pull dead college student from river near SUNY Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WIVB) — A student of SUNY Plattsburgh is dead after he jumped into the Saranac River Sunday near the school’s campus.

Police say they rushed to the scene to pull Evan Gillies, a Huntington, N.Y., resident, from the water at about 4:20 p.m. Gillies reportedly jumped off a bridge that crossed the river and never resurfaced.

A water rescue team pulled the man’s body from the river just over an hour after a search for him began. A doctor pronounced him as dead at a local hospital.

Police say investigation is continuing and an autopsy will follow the death. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
