ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) — Following the final preseason game in Detroit, the Buffalo Bills have released 16 players, including one controversial former New York Jet.

The Bills parted ways with both IK Enemkpali, an embattled player who punched his former New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith, and quarterback Matt Simms. Both did not impress in the final preseason game.

Enemkapli came to the Bills after his release from the New York Jets, potentially due to being a former draft pick of Rex Ryan when he still served as head coach of the Jets. His play on Thursday night in Detroit may have let down coaches, especially after he incurred two large penalties, including one in the fourth quarter in the red zone that allowed for a touchdown, giving the Lions a win.

Simms, who completed 22 of his 38 pass attempts, fumbled and lost the ball three times in the 17-10 loss.

In addition to the cuts, the Bills announced cornerback Leodis McKelvin would be placed on the non-football injury list, meaning he will miss the first six weeks of play. Wide receiver Deonte Thompson was also designated as waived/injured.

The following players also have been released:

  • Will Campbell

  • Darryl Johnson
