BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – It’s rare to see an empty chair at Good Looks barbershop on Hertel Avenue. Especially this time of year.
“The back to school shopping, the hair cuts. That’s like the final piece of the puzzle,” one mom explained.
After ten years in business, Co-owner Thomas Barwell and his staff know to prepare for the September rush.
“A lot of kids heading back to school. This is definitely the busy time for the little guys,” he said.
Just because they’re younger and smaller than the average customer doesn’t mean they don’t know exactly what they want.
“Um, a faux hawk,” one boy responded when asked what style he was getting.
“A little trim,” another young customer told News 4.
Creativity is encouraged at this full service shop. News 4 cameras even watched one of the barbers shave a minion into the back of a boy’s head, to match the T-shirt he was planning on wearing to school for his first day.
Unless they’re getting a complicated design, most kids cuts take about half an hour. As long as everyone cooperates.
“It gets a little hectic, trying to hold on to them,” Barwell explained about his little customers. “An adult isn’t moving at all, and they’re doing what you need, you know. The little guys, sometimes they need a little help, and the mom or dad hold on to them a little bit.”
Speaking of mom and dad — they better like the results, too.
“Definitely trying to please the parent and the little guy, you know. If he’s not happy, he’s not coming back. With the parent as well.”
Just take it from the moms we spoke with — the Good Looks guys get a lot of repeat business.
“Oh I think he looks adorable, it’s perfect,” Amy Constantine said after seeing her four-year-old son with his new ‘do.
“Oh he looks great,” another mom, Ashley Janes, said. “This is the best haircut. His little girlfriend Haley is going to like it. I’ll tell you that much.”
“They come out looking so fresh. I just love the fresh cuts,” Jackie Monacelli, whose two sons walked away with faux hawks, said. “We’re from Lancaster, so we drive in, every couple weeks. My husband and the boys, we’ve been coming here for years, so. They love Tommy, all the guys.”
