BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Seven people are in the hospital recovering after an early morning fire at an apartment in North Buffalo Tuesday.
It started on the second floor of a building in the 1200 block of Hertel Avenue.
Buffalo Fire Commissioner, Garnell Whitfield, said police officers and a good Samaritan worked together to evacuate three children and three adults from the apartment.
Fire officials told News 4 everyone inside the home and the good Samaritan who helped, suffered from smoke inhalation. They were all taken to the hospital.
Officials believe the children’s father and a one-month-old baby have the worst injures. The father was burned and rushed to ECMC for treatment.
Commissioner Whitfield said firefighters worked through difficult conditions to put out the blaze. It was contained to the apartment and did not spread to other homes or businesses.
The Al Noor Grocery Store beneath the apartment has water and smoke damage. The store’s owner said it will be closed until the damages are fixed.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Damage is estimated at about $400,000.
