Vandals spray paint Buffalo Christopher Columbus statue

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A long-standing statue at prospect park on Porter Avenue has been vandalized, and police are searching for those behind it.

Vandals used spray paint to spell out a political message about Christopher Columbus, the statue’s likeness. Someone spray painted the words rape and genocide on the statue.

“This appears to be a political statement using graffiti and that type of vandalism to make that statement, which is very unacceptable,” Sam Lunetta said.

The statue, that has stood for more than 60 years, has been vandalized in the past.
