Eckl’s, longtime Orchard Park staple, closing

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) — Eckl’s Restaurant, best known for one of the best Beef on Weck sandwiches in greater Buffalo — at least according to regulars — is closing up shop after decades of service in Orchard Park.

There are only a few weeks left if you want to belly up to the bar or one of their tables.Their final service will be Saturday, Sept. 26.

The restaurant, located at 4936 Ellicott Road, has been an institution in the community since the 1930s. In 1964, Shirley Eckl and her family took over the restaurant’s operation. The building, which seats around 100 guests, has been placed on the market.

Neighbors say word of its closing has spread quickly.

Elaine Menclewicz, who works at Vera dry cleaners across the street, couldn’t count how many times she’s stopped by, but it’s in the dozens and dozens. She says the local landmark will be greatly missed.

“Just devastated the fact that it’s closing,” Menclewicz said. “Well known everywhere. Regular customers all the time. They’re busy constantly with the same clientele. New people coming in want to know where to eat. You know. And they’ll just pop up and say, Eckl’s. Best beef in town.”

Family members said only that closing is in their best interest. And there are no plans at this point to go into any other restaurant ventures. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
