Police name victim, commend bystanders after fatal Depew crash

DEPEW, N.Y. (WIVB) — A severe crash on a residential Depew street Wednesday severed an engine block from a car, but also a local woman from her life.

Police say they’re still investigating the crash; investigators remained on the scene of the 11:30 a.m. crash on French Road near Alys Drive through the late evening. They say the crash killed 72-year-old Carol Dion, a Depew native, and injured her passenger.

Dion’s car collided with a red pickup truck, the driver of which also suffered injury in the crash. Police say those that suffered injury are lucky to have their lives, and can potentially thank Depew residents and neighbors who rushed to the scene.

Police say neighbors rushed to the scene and helped the accident victims as they waited for support from first responders. A Depew Police source said that support was key in saving lives.

Charges have not yet been filed in the case, but police say the investigation is very much open.
