ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) — A shaky preseason filled with missed kicks didn’t inspire confidence from Bills coaching staff in veteran kicker Dan Carpenter.
Throughout the preseason, Carpenter missed a series of kicks, both field goals and extra point attempts. Those misses forced an outbreak from Buffalo’s Head Coach Rex Ryan, where he said he’d be shopping around the league for a kicker.
Ryan went so far as to claim anybody who can kick should try out for the position. Ryan didn’t recant his outbreak on Sunday after Buffalo’s 27-14 win against the Colts, in fact, he said he’s glad he lit a fire under Carpenter’s foot.
That fire may just be what inspired a flawless performance by the veteran kicker. He knocked out nine points in Sunday’s win, including two field goals and three extra point attempts.
“Man I’m glad I ripped Carpenter,” Rex explained before chuckling a little with a joke. “We have a hate, hate relationship.”
The relationship is that of a coach and his kicker, with a team that in the past has lived or died by a bad kick.
Ryan didn’t note if he would still be shopping around for another kicker, but did note he felt confident in the kicker’s performance.
