Wednesday, Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation’s Board of Directors voted to accept the revised plan for the museum at Canalside.

It was originally slated for another Canalside location, but Chairman of ECHDC Robert Gioia said this new spot provides more space for the museum.

The free standing building will be in the South Aud block of Canalside, in front of the Harbor Center.

It will have four floors, and tell the story of Buffalo’s history through eight unique play zones. ECHDC is putting $9 Million into the building, and will hold a 40 year lease for the museum.

“Explore and more is just another fixture on our Inner Harbor that’s going to attract tens of thousands of individuals and families, including my own,” said Sen. Tim Kennedy Wednesday.

“We’re thrilled to have the opportunity with this new site to expand outdoor programming,” said Director of Waterfront Expansion for Explore & More, Barbara Leggett.

“What’s wonderful about the site is that it’s now Explore & More and more and more and more,” she said.

This new location will push back the museum’s opening date back by about a year. Construction is get to begin in late 2016, and the museum should be open by 2018.

Another likely addition to Canalside is an antique carousel: people behind that project want to see it near the museum. ECHDC favors the idea too, but said nothing is nailed down yet.
