Seasonal allergies could be effecting your pets

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — As the weather begins to cool down, you may start to notice some seasonal allergy symptoms.

But what you may not know, is that those irritants can also be effecting your animals.

Dr. Chris Korte at Powers Pet Emergency says allergies are really common in small animals, and sometimes owners may not even notice their pet is suffering from them.

He says this year, it’s something they’re seeing a lot of.

“We’ve had a lot more moisture here this year than I think we’ve had in the past few years, and I think that definitely allows plants and pollens to grow,” Dr. Korte said. “We have a lot more of those issues [this year] than we have had in the past.”

Dr. Korte says seasonal allergies primarily affect dogs, and normally it’s a minor reaction.

“When it comes to allergies in general, you can have swelling, inflammation or red paws. They’ll lick the paws a lot…Redness on the abdomen or on their bellies, even you can see hair loss if it’s gone long enough,” he said.

And if it goes untreated, your pet could get a skin infection.

But the cases Dr. Korte deals with are a lot more serious.

“Most of the ones we see are the ones that are swelling in the face, and they’re more of a true emergency where they could be having troubles breathing,” Dr. Korte said.

Luckily, animal hospitals have fast-acting relief for cases like this.

But if your dog is suffering from more minor reactions, there are treatment options.

“Medications are dosed based on weight so I always recommend before giving anything over the counter to check with your veterinarian first,” Dr. Korte said.

Most primary vet clinics recommended using a daily antihistamine like Benadryl.

But again, it’s always important to talk to your doctor before using any type of treatment like shampoos or pills.
