Local police officer involved in crash while en route to another accident

TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) — A local police officer is recovering after crashing into a car while responding to another accident.

The Town of Tonawanda Police Department says the officer collided with another vehicle at Delaware Avenue and Sheridan Drive at around 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

The officer was driving with his lights and sirens on after receiving a call about a crash between a motorcycle and a car, authorities say.

The impact of the accident caused the police cruiser to fly onto the sidewalk and take down a utility pole, which knocked out power to the traffic signal at the intersection. The area was closed to traffic for several hours during an investigation.

The cop was taken to Kenmore Mercy Hospital for evaluation, and the driver of the other vehicle declined medical attention.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to call the Town of Tonawanda Police Department at (716) 879-6613.
