BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Buffalo Police responded to the scene of a standoff at McCarley Gardens apartment complex in Buffalo, near the end of the 33 expressway. After more than two hours of negotiations, the man at the center of the standoff surrendered without incident.
Police say the standoff involved a 25-year-old man held himself up alone inside one of the apartments, with a knife. Police described the man as “distraught”.
They say the call came in just before 9:20 a.m. Wednesday for a hostage situation. According to police, the man was holding his girlfriend and his brother inside the apartment, before they were able to escape through a back window, with the help of an officer.
SWAT officers responded to the scene as well as the Crisis Management Team and an ambulance, on standby. At about 11:22 a.m., police say the standoff ended peacefully when the man exited the apartment.
“I think the one thing that negotiators tried to stress to him was, ‘You’re 25 years old and you have a young child. And you want to be there for your young child,'” recalled Mike DeGeorge, a spokesperson for the Buffalo Police Department.
The man was able to walk out of the apartment on his own, with only minor cuts, police said. He was taken to the Erie County Medical Center for evaluation.
No other injuries were reported.
There is no word at this point about whether the man who had barricaded himself in the apartment will face any charges. Police say they did recover the knife he was using.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area before the man surrendered to police.
