Former NU hockey player accused of murder heads back to jail after making bail

Thomas Clayton

CATON, N.Y. (WIVB) — A man accused of murder was let out of jail on $250,000 bail, but he’s heading back to jail after police say he violated an order of protection.

Steuben County Sheriff’s Deputies say Thomas Clayton, who is accused of murdering his 35-year-old wife, violated an order of protection that a judge recently set on Wednesday morning.

Now Clayton is back in jail on charges of second degree criminal contempt. When he appeared in front of a judge Wednesday, bail was set at $500,000 cash.

Police in Steuben County have been poring over Kelley Clayton’s death, and thus far have charged both Thomas Clayton and 44-year-old Michael Beard with murder.

The case remains open and under investigation. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
