Man who was caught with bloody hatchet after attacking girlfriend and child pleads guilty

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A man apprehended with a bloody hatchet after a violent attack has pleaded guilty to his crimes in court.

Police say they responded on Sept. 1 to a Buffalo home where a local man’s attempted robbery went south. Officers say David Wingate attempted to steal from his girlfriend’s 11-year-old daughter to pay debts to his crack dealer when his girlfriend stepped in.

When his girlfriend stopped the robbery, police say Wingate, a man who served 17 years behind bars for first degree manslaughter, turned to violence. Wingate grabbed two knives and a hatchet and attacked his girlfriend and her child.

Police who responded to the scene say Wingate caused nerve damage when he cut his girlfriend to the bone, but officers were able to arrest him with the bloody hatchet still in his hand.

Wingate pleaded guilty as charged to first degree assault and second degree assault in New York State Supreme Court on Friday.

The convicted felon faces up to 32-years behind bars when he is sentenced on Nov. 17 in Supreme Court. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
