BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — After pleading guilty to writing illegal prescriptions in exchange for personal favors, paper products, and a gas grill, a doctor in Clarence is heading to jail.
Matthew Bennett, 49, was sentenced to 36 months behind bars on Monday for the crimes he pleaded guilty to earlier this year. Prosecutors say he gave drugs to undercover officers without a proper medical exam. He reportedly wrote prescriptions for Oxycodone.
Federal officials accused Bennett of conducting his illegal business mostly at his office in North Tonawanda, which was raided in the course of the investigation.
During Bennett’s guilty plea, U.S. Attorney William Hochul said, “This particular defendant was willing to barter people’s lives.”
As part of his guilty plea, Matthew Bennett surrendered his medical license and his DEA registration to sell narcotics.
Bennett’s jail time will be spent in federal prison.
